“Stand up straight!” Great suggestion. We’ve all been told this at some point, but do we listen? Seldomly, especially in today’s word of computers and hand-held devices that have us hunched over all the time. Rosenberg Wellness Center presents some explanations for bad posture and some reasons to keep good posture. We chiropractors are known for encouraging good posture!
RESULTS OF POOR POSTURE
- Decrease in Bone Mineral Density – Spinal posture has been discovered to influence bone density. Increases in thoracic spine or lumbar spine (mid and lower back) curvature show local bone mineral density decreases in both pre- and post-menopausal women. (1) Rosenberg Wellness Center has some nutrition tips to maintain and build your bone density.
- Poorer Vision - Scoliosis subjects may find that their vision is affected due to a dysfunction of the nerve pathways in the brain stem. (2) Now, Rosenberg Wellness Center isn’t out to fix your scoliosis but rather to keep it flexible and mobile and in as good a condition as possible.
- Disc Herniation into the Concavity of the Curve - The occurrence of cervical spine (neck) disc herniation was found to be at the C6-7 level on the right side in 3 cases and in 19 cases on the left side. This may also suggest the importance of maintaining healthy spine posture so as to avoid such disc herniation with its resultant neck and arm pain. (3) So, hold your head up and straight!
Finally, a study of 804 65 to 94 year old people found that the most important factor in their being able to perform activities of daily living was the curvature of their thoracic, lumbar and pelvic spines. That is, if these curves were normal in their forward and backward angulations, these 65 to 94 year olds were set to continue doing their activities of daily living. (4) Our New York City patients can do the same.
We trust you have a few more reasons as to why good posture is so important when you’re young and old. These are also good reasons to visit your New York City chiropractor at Rosenberg Wellness Center. So contact us today to evaluate your spine and posture and keep your spine moving normally!
