New York City CHIROPRACTIC TIP OF THE MONTH: Strengthen the Quadratus Lumborum
The quadratus lumborum – a quadrilateral-shaped muscle - is a paired muscle on both sides of the abdominal wall. It is a deep muscle and usually thought of as a back muscle as it stretches from the 12th rib to the upper 4 lumbar vertebrae. When contracted, the quadratus lumborum produces lateral flexion of the lumbar spine and/or rise of the pelvis. (5) A variety of bridge-type exercises are being examined about the way in which they strengthen the quadratus lumborum’s dual layers of muscle in order for it to best contribute to the motor control of the lumbar pain and stop back pain. (6) Rosenberg Wellness Center and you can discuss how your spine may benefit from such exercise at your next New York City chiropractic visit to Rosenberg Wellness Center.
