New York City Chiropractic Nutrition Plan for Osteoporosis & Osteoarthritis

Nutrition. Good nutrition is a good foundation for a healthy body. In our New York City chiropractic practice, we consult with patients who have conditions like osteoporosis and osteoarthritis that develop over time. Their potential prevention and treatment are foundationally rooted in early-life nutrition habits that are maintained and/or enhanced throughout life. Rosenberg Wellness Center shares recent research on the significance of vitamins A, C and D as well as glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate for bones and joints and overall health.  

HEALTHY CELLS, CARTILAGE, & BONE PREVENT DISEASES LIKE OSTEOPOROSIS & OSTEOARTHRITIS

Optimal nutrition status protects the body and keeps it strong and healthy. Research has demonstrated the benefits of glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate in slowing osteoarthritis of the knee. Researchers now want to explore how nutrients, vitamins, antioxidants and other natural components in a normal diet may be beneficial. (1) Optimal bone and cartilage metabolism wards off issues like osteoporosis and osteoarthritis. Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) controls bone and cartilage metabolism at the cellular level – even into the nucleus of the cell – of osteoblasts and chondrocytes. (2) The metabolism of articular cartilage relies on chondroprotectors (CPs) that influence the regeneration of cartilage surfaces and joint capsules. In osteoarthritis and low back pain, loss of chondroitin sulfate and hyaline cartilage is noted. Some methods to alleviate this situation involved injections of CPs. (3) Other approaches involved oral supplementation as diet is not often a source of these CPs. Oral supplementation is also a preferred way to improve vitamin D levels as low levels of vitamin D are known to contribute  to issues like osteoporosis, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, some cancer types, and overweight/obese status. Vitamin D is key, but its natural sources like fatty fish and eggs are not usually part of most people’s daily diets. In Spain, at least half of the population is deficient in vitamin D. Researchers recommended that Spain find a way to urge people to eat eggs to fight the vitamin D deficiency and ward off future diseases. (4) It is particularly important for those who have a combination of issues - osteoporosis, vitamin D deficiency and high fracture/fall risk – to keep up their supplementation of vitamin D. (5) Feeding yourself goes so far beyond just feeding your stomach and satisfying your cravings! The food you eat and the supplements you ingest keep your body working, healthy and strong.
